Review Policy

Even though A Spoonful of Words is for the most part a personal thought-dump, I do review books. Mostly young adult and middle grade science fiction and fantasy, but occasionally I’ll branch out and review contemporary genres and graphic novels/manga.  Because I have an unhealthy obsession with kitchen utensils and references to popular Disney songs, my reviews are rated on a scale of one to five happy spoons. Here’s what each spoon rating means:

5 Spoons: Godlike; must read or continue to live a life of pale existence.
4 1/2 Spoons: Pretty darn awesome.
4 Spoons: It was great.
3 1/2 Spoons: It was good.
3 Spoons: Meh, bit of a disappointment, but still alright.
2 1/2 Spoons: Let’s just say…there were problems. A lot of problems.
1 Spoon: No. Just…no.

The reason for every rating will be explained in detail, even if I choose to give a book a poor rating/negative review. Writing in itself is a journey and takes a lot of time, persistence, and love to accomplish. I respect that, and respect the effort that goes into creating any work of fiction. However, with that said, I’m not into lying about a book if I didn’t like it. I’m also not into receiving money or bribes for a positive review.

If you have questions, concerns, or if you’re an author, publisher, or self-published author who would like to send me a book to review, please visit the ABOUT & CONTACT page for information on how to reach me. I will accept physical and digital copies of a book, so long as the digital file can be read (or converted to be read) on a Kindle. However,  I admit that I still prefer physical copies to digital and usually read them faster. Speaking of reading…

Turn around time for review requests is 1-2 months (given that I am currently accepting requests), unless special arrangements are made to accommodate something such as a blog tour schedule. AS OF 1/1/2015: REQUESTS ARE CLOSED.

Oh, and reviews are posted here on my blog (obviously) and on GoodreadsLinks to reviews are shared on Twitter.
